Against official inflation

Data Purl: same-product full prices online Official CPI: Apparel
-2.5%0%2.5%5%202420252026
US apparel, change vs a year earlier, monthly, January 2024 to September 2026. Official series: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), US city average, not seasonally adjusted, item "Apparel" (CUUR0000SAA). BLS did not publish October 2025.

Why the two differ. They answer different questions. The CPI measures what people pay for apparel in stores and online, including sale prices, and adjusts for changes in product quality. This index compares the full (list) price of the exact same products at covered online retailers a year apart, with no quality adjustment, so it isolates list-price moves; discounting is measured separately below.

Definitions

Shelf price change
The change in the full (list) price of the same products compared with the same week a year earlier, in local currency. Only products listed in both weeks count, so new launches and discontinued lines do not move it. Price changes are combined with a geometric mean, the method statistical agencies use for matched prices, and the monthly figure is the average of the weekly readings.
Markdown breadth
The share of each product's in-stock sizes and variants selling below full price, averaged across products so each product counts equally.
Average discount
The average discount on marked-down products, measured against their full price, with each product counting equally.
